Fred And Leah

Leah finds out she is pregnant just as Britain declares war on Germany. Fred is part of the British Expeditionary Force which is cut off from Dunkirk and then captured by the Germans at St Valery and forced to walk hundreds of miles through France, Belgium and Holland. Conditions in the POW camps are grim and Fred manages to get a transfer to another camp. Meanwhile, Leah is struggling to raise her new baby alongside a toddler. She suffers from milk fever, every house in the street is bombed except hers, she is under the illusion that she gave birth to twins and eventually she has a nervous breakdown and attempts to steal a baby. She is committed to a mental asylum and given electric shock treatment. When Fred eventually returns from the war, he consents to a lobotomy in the hope that the procedure will return Leah to the woman he fell in love with but the results are disastrous and the two are destined to remain apart forever.
