Synopsis

Cecil Chambers, a mild mannered office worker, struggles through his current daily life, stress from his divorce amongst other things is keeping him from feeling relaxed. He attends a therapist meeting to discuss ways to relax and leaves having noted he finds making matchstick models and Elton John’s music the best thing for his own sense of calm. However, upon finding out his wife has actually found someone else, Cecil’s normally calm demeanour breaks down as he swats a fly, before having to put it out of its misery to ‘Sacrifice’. The therapist notes this is a good thing as Cecil feels liberated as a result. The therapist tells Cecil he needs to ‘eradicate the annoyances’ from his life. Following on from a severe panic attack, a doctor too tells Cecil he needs to makes sure he ‘doesn’t stress’. Cecil takes this advice to heart and upon being faced with a cyclist blocking the road, Cecil drives through the cyclist with the music of Elton John accompanying his murder. Through a series of events, Cecil then believes his soon to be ex-wife may know about this crime and again with the help of Elton john’s music, he murders her solicitor and then her and her boyfriend. He then buries all the bodies. The police visit and he invites them in for tea before being allowed to put on some music as he makes their drink. He puts on some Elton John and it is obvious what is to occur. Cecil then heads off to see Elton John in concert and as he does so, the police slowly piece together what has been happening and track him down to the concert. Cecil realises the game is up and his matchstick model he has been creating throughout, is revealed.
