Contact me at aphillips@(my Circalit name).co.uk **********(NB. ordinarily I'm a paragraphs fan). ************I try and apply as systematic a critique as possible ************* I actually don't believe in saying I 'like' or 'dislike' something, or it's 'good' or 'bad'. I am more inclined to try and find out if it has achieved it's own (genre) goals - and measure it against a set of standards I consider relevant. ****************** The questions I enjoy asking myself are stuff like: Does the script rely on cultural constructs or does it aim for reality? If it's the former, is there enough detail or too much 'lazy thinking'? (I can be guilty of this myself). *************** Is the story plot drivel... I mean driven (ha ha) or character based? - This is one way of understanding narrative sometimes useful. ***************** I feel that if you are really involved in a text, stars become rather meaningless and so I am more into trying to be objective, that is, I prefer to use argument and words over symbols, smileys and avatars! (Although I welcome them occasionally!) *****************

    • Yes, I know what you mean about adding friends - you need the right kind of input otherwise low quality criticism can do more harm than good in terms of wasting time. Writing's emotionally draining at times as it is! If you need something read over let me know and I'll do my best.

    • Hi Graham, (I'm writing stuff here but I don't even know where I'm writing it!) Just had a look at FIrst Woman - when's the rest of it coming through? - Looks like it'll be good...

    • That's really interesting. I don't want to see it as a puzzle I must have the answer to anyway. I think it is a great piece of lit. without that knowledge or should be appreciated as such. I hope you made the most of the chocolate and book token! If I can I'll have a look at the Woman First you wrote over the weekend. It'll be interesting to see if you continue to use your expansive and vivid sense of colour and vocabulary to bring out the extraordinary from the ordinary, let's say, or if you use your writing to examine those massive questions, which have always troubled humankind! And of course it's a film script so in many ways more restrictive and potentially frustrating, but I suspect it'll be equally as entertaining.
