SYNOPSIS Mike Grey, a millionaire, has feelings for Vicky Harding, an amateur tennis player, who he has known since his college days. Unfortunately, he can’t tell her how he really feels and ends up saying something foolish. His best friend Richard deNoovine a songwriter, who is sharing ‘Railway Hall’ with Mike during a long visit to Torquay, falls in love with Catherine Malcolm an actress from the local theatre. But she is engaged to be married to the lead actor, Stephen Marx. It emerges that as well as abusing Catherine Malcolm, Stephen Marx is also having an affair with Jennifer Moss, Catherine’s understudy. Richard attempts to make Catherine see the truth unsuccessfully. Mike Grey plans to tell Vicky Harding his true feelings before she leaves to take part in a local tennis tournament. He writes it down as a poem, which Richard substitutes for one of his songs. But, when Vicky reads it she feels confused and leaves. Richard deNoovine asks Mike to prepare one of his legendary parties so he can have one last attempt to convince Catherine Malcolm that Stephen Marx isn’t the person she should be spending the rest of her life with. He agrees. After Stephen Marx leaves with the excuse that he is going for further auditions at ‘Acre Films.’ Catherine receives a phone call from Jennifer Moss, who teases her about her affair with Stephen. Catherine becomes jealous and thinks about getting even with Stephen by sleeping with Richard. Vicky Harding is involved in a car accident, Mike rushes to be at her bedside, he finally tells her how he feels, she agrees that she feels the same way. When Catherine turns up at ‘Railway Hall’ Richard sees through her deception, she finally realises that Stephen has been mistreating her. Without realising it, they fall in love and end up in bed together. Stephen returns from a bad night with Jennifer Moss, in an angry and drunken state, discovering where Catherine is, he takes a gun and goes to ‘Railway Hall.’ After a confrontation between him and Richard, Mike returns to prevent Richard being killed, but Richard is injured. Thomas, the Butler reveals a secret about Mike’s fortune. Mike returns to Vicky Harding’s hospital room and asks her to marry him. She agrees.
