Synopsis

Sergeant Jason Ambrose is helping an old lady in an African township when an explosion rocks the street.  He looks up to see the smoking and burning remnants of the armoured truck which now holds the corpses of his UN colleagues.

The local terrorists start to destroy houses in the local area and as Jason escorts the old lady to her house they see it destroyed.  He decides to take her with him as he escapes the area and the dangers of the trigger-happy militia.

Unable to communicate through a common spoken tongue they find their way out of town and Jason realises just how wild the country is once they're away from the town.  The old lady, as Jason finds out is called Myr'yam and she proves to be a worthy travelling companion.

Within Myr'yam's small bag of possessions is a small and battered, but treasured photograph and when she collapses from exhaustion during the journey Jason makes a strange discovery.

    • Great context but I think the first part needs editing where it's hard to keep up with the characters as we don't know them and this tends to stop us have any feeling for them. (But maybe that's the point!') I nearly stopped reading but so glad I continued because despite some irritation with lack of attention to detail this is a very atmospheric story, full of content and a visceral sense of place. You know that there is violence all around.
