I have a new book on screenwriting coming out in July. It's called THE LAST WORD - DEFINITIVE ANSWERS TO ALL YOUR SCREENWRITING QUESTIONS. I HAVE A PLAY BEING READ IN JULY AND I'M WORKING ON A NEW PLAY CALLED "KICK ASS MARY" NOW, ON YOU
I've written seven movies that have been made, eight movies of the week and over a hundred hours of network TV. I've taught and been a script consultant for many many years consulting on scripts for writers around the world. Writers I've consulted for and taught have had features and movies of the week made, won screenwriting contests and have thrived under my tutelage. My training is non-academic. I learned my craft in the trenches and have written everything from features, TV, documentaries, informational films and educational films. I've directed five features, 20 hours of television, ran my own TV series for five years and worked in motion picture marketing for ten years. When I do a consultation, not only do I supply the writer notes, but I work with the writer preparing the rewrite. I draw on my varied background to give notes that are relevant, concise, thoughtful and helpful and have many returns consultations.

    • Thanks for being a fan. A one word synopsis of your script? You mean read your script and come up with a one word synopsis. Doesn't feel like a good use of my time. Tips for getting an agent? Keep writing. Make sure your script is perfect and has reached it's potential before sending it out. Then, be persistent. Good luck. Keep writing and keep thinking about writing. Tom.

Feedback Offered

What do you get?

I will provide you with a feedback report on the synopsis of your script.

Why is it important?

These writer’s tools are extremely important as they are the basis for writing script. The job of the writer is to begin to accomplish the hard conceptual work at this preliminary level and the more work done on these make writing the script more efficient. I work with writers beyond the initial notes and supply continued input on the evolving work material.

What do you get?

I will provide a feedback report on the first 15 pages of your script.

Why is it important?

The first fifteen pages are the most important of the script. These pages, the foundation of the script, establish the tone, pace, film language and characters that follow and must be right. Industry professionals judge writers based on the first five to ten pages and ‘get’ the quality of the writer in these pages. It is vital to have these pages perfect as many readers won’t read further if these pages don’t work..

What do you get?

I will provide you with detailed notes on your entire screenplay. My notes address structure, format, story and character and anything I see that can be improved. My notes are informed by the twenty years I’ve been teaching and the over fifty original screenplays I’ve written. My goal is to raise the level of the writing and the marketability and quality of the script.

Why is it important?

I endeavor to keep the writer’s goals in mind and create notes that come from within the idea. The context of my notes take into consideration what the screenwriter is attempting to do and what ultimately will be done with the script when it’s finished.
